During Tuesday’s Egypt Cup match between Ahly and Kima Aswan, Ahly striker Amir Sayoud struck a penalty kick of dreams. Bad, bad dreams.
I REMEMBER WHEN I was around 13 years old and I scored an own goal from the halfway line. No shit. Our keeper had kicked the ball down field, and it came to me, hovering around the centre circle. And… I volleyed it… straight back into the top right corner of my own team’s goal. I don’t know how – let alone why – I did it, but we went on to win the match anyway, and I played like an incandescent demon of embarrassed rage from that point on.
Luckily, this penalty cock-up by Algerian striker Amir Sayoud for Egyptian superstars Ahly didn’t cost them the game either. Though it might cost him a few sleepless nights.
To add insult to injury, Sayoud was also booked for “disregarding the opponent” – presumably a kind of contempt of court for the football field.
Ahram online reports the Ahly assistant coach said Sayoud just needs a bit more experience, saying:
“We will not punish him for sure. We will just work on developing his shooting skills during training.”
Kicking the ball instead of the ground would be a good start.
